In the classic 52-week savings challenge you save 1 in week one, 2 in week two and keep adding 1 each week until you save 52 in the final week. The total after a year is 1,378. This tracker builds the full schedule for any starting amount, lets you tick off weeks, and can be printed or downloaded.
Three ways to run the challenge
- Start small: the classic version. Deposits grow each week, so the hardest weeks come at the end of the year.
- Start big: the same deposits in reverse. You save the largest amounts first, while motivation is high, and finish with small ones. This can help if your costs rise in the last months of the year.
- Same amount every week: the steadiest option. Saving 20 a week gives 1,040 after 52 weeks.
A worked example
This hypothetical example uses US dollars; the amounts are not a savings recommendation. With a base amount of 2, deposits rise by 2 each week: 2 in week one, 104 in week 52 and 2,756 in total. They do not double from one week to the next.
Check the largest deposit against your budget. Reversing this schedule still requires a 104 deposit, just in week one instead of week 52. If that is too much, reduce the base amount or choose an affordable fixed weekly amount. Either choice changes the total you will save.
Making it stick
Keep the challenge money separate from everyday spending, and choose a saving day that fits your payday and bill dates. The CFPB’s savings booklet encourages specific goals. If you miss a week, only catch up if your budget allows; reducing the target or taking longer is safer than leaving essential bills uncovered.
About the tracker
Ticks stay in this tab only and clear when you leave. The CSV download contains the deposit schedule with a blank Done column; it does not export your checked boxes. Mark your completed weeks in the downloaded file yourself. Each increasing or reverse deposit is the base amount multiplied by its schedule step; fixed-style deposits all equal the amount entered.
Enter amounts in one currency. Display currency changes the label, not exchange rates. The 52-week total assumes every scheduled deposit is made and none of that money is withdrawn. Protect downloaded or printed records yourself.
